TEARS fundraiser art exhibition in Noordhoek where RePAWposed art meets heart

Support TEARS Animal Rescue at an auction of lovingly reimagined, ‘rePAWposed’ art, taking place at the Noordhoek Art Point Gallery on 1 August 2025. The Deep South’s legendary hairstylist and generally quite hilarious character, Reto Camichel, will MC the auctioning of these off-the-wall, conversation-starter pieces, and is guaranteed to bring the house down.

TEARS Animal Rescue spokesperson, Tinka Shapiro, says, “After a stunning success in 2024, we’re delighted to have the wonderful RePAWposed Art Exhibition and Auction back again. This, is our third year, features twenty talented, young, local artists who have reimagined and transformed forgotten or donated paintings into creative, bold pieces that bring hope to rescue animals. This is not your average art exhibition, it’s whimsical and thought-provoking, surprising and a little bit cheeky,” she says.

You can view the exhibition from Wednesday, 16 July until 1 August at Art Point to decide which one-of-a-kind rePAWposed piece best suits you!

Reto, himself a fabulous one-of-a-kind and owner of RetoHQ Hair in Kalk Bay, promises to keep you wildly entertained during the auction. His outrageous sense of humour and quirky sense of fun will have you laughing your head off.

TEARS

Shapiro says, “We are so delighted to have Reto as Master of Ceremonies at the auction. It promises to be a fun, feel-good night with wine, music and laughter! When you’re bidding, remember that every bid is giving an animal-in-need a second chance at shelter, care and love,” she says.

Don’t miss this chance to be entertained and bid on beautiful unique art for a fantastic cause.

All proceeds go to TEARS Animal Rescue.

Auction starts at 6pm at Art Point, 16 Noordhoek Main Road, behind the ‘Smarties’ wall.

World Rescue Dog Day: Adopt Don’t Shop!

FOUR PAWS urges South Africans to open their hearts to shelter animals

As World Rescue Dog Day approaches on 20 May, global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS South Africa is calling on the public to consider adopting rescue dogs from local animal shelters, rather than purchasing pets. With millions of animals in South Africa facing homelessness, adoption remains one of the most compassionate and impactful actions individuals can take.

South Africa is currently grappling with a serious pet overpopulation crisis. An estimated 4.05 million dogs and cats live without permanent homes, including 1.7 million stray dogs, 1.7 million stray cats, and over 650,000 animals housed in shelters. These figures are compounded by socio-economic challenges such as poverty, limited access to veterinary services, and low public awareness about the benefits of adopting rescue animals.

Rescue

“Animal shelters across the country need your help,” says Fiona Miles, Director at FOUR PAWS South Africa. “They are overcrowded, under-resourced, and often overlooked. Every adoption not only changes the life of a rescued animal but also helps relieve the immense pressure shelters face daily.” Despite common misconceptions, rescue dogs are just as loving, healthy, and loyal as animals bought from breeders or pet shops. Many find themselves in shelters through no fault of their own often as a result of abandonment, abuse, or financial hardship faced by their previous owners.

FOUR PAWS encourages the public to visit their local shelters, engage with the animals, and learn more about the adoption process. Choosing to adopt not only gives an animal a second chance but also helps break the cycle of unethical breeding and overpopulation.

Benefits of adopting a rescue dog include:

  • Saving lives by providing a second chance to an animal in need.
  • Fostering responsible pet ownership through education and support from shelter staff.
  • Discouraging unethical breeding practices by reducing demand for commercially bred animals.
  • Enriching your life with a loyal, grateful companion.

“By adopting a rescue dog, you are making a life-changing difference — not just for that one animal, but for the future of animal welfare in South Africa,” says Miles.

This World Rescue Dog Day, FOUR PAWS South Africa urges everyone who is able and ready for the responsibility to consider adoption. Even those who cannot adopt can still make an impact through fostering, volunteering, or supporting their local shelters.

CHPA always going the extra mile!

CHPA

CHPA always going the extra mile!

When Sheriff, the owner of Whitey who is unregistered, first came to CHPA, he was eager to do the right thing. We stepped in, offering training, support, proper harnessing, and cart repairs to get him on the right track.

But last Wednesday, Sheriff returned after another welfare organisation said he must bring Whitey to us, this time with a heartbreaking situation. Whitey was skeletal, frail, and clearly starving!!

Thanks to your support, we were able to act immediately. Whitey was confiscated on the spot and taken to our Recovery and Rehabilitation Centre, where he is now safe, warm, and eating… and eating… and eating.

Your donations give us the power to act fast when horses like Whitey are in urgent need. Thank you for making his rescue possible.

CHPA

Zelda was found pulling an empty cart, not because she had finished her load, but because there was nothing to load. Her owner, a long-time and well-respected member of the carting community, had fallen on hard times. He was too proud to ask for help.

Zelda’s condition told us everything, we had no choice but to confiscate her. Her owner understood. He had always cared for his horses well, and we knew this was not neglect, but a crisis.

CHPA

Thanks to your generosity, not only is Zelda now receiving the care she desperately needs, but we are also helping her owner feed his remaining three horses until he can get back on his feet.

Sometimes, helping horses means helping the people behind them too. Your support allows us to be there when it matters most, for animals and their humans.

TEARS Animal Rescue Appeals for Support for its Feed Hungry Pets Programme

TEARS Animal Rescue Appeals for Support for its Feed Hungry Pets Programme

TEARS Animal Rescue, the Cape Town-based animal rescue non-profit organisation (NPO), needs donations to support its Feed Hungry Pets Programme, which helps families who are struggling to feed their beloved pets. This unique programme provides supplemental feeding to assist families in low-income communities meet their responsibilities. It ensures that pets receive sufficient food and can remain in their homes with the people who love them.

When there’s barely enough to put food on the table, it’s often the dogs that go hungry. Cats are usually a bit more resourceful when left to fend for themselves, though scavenging and hunting is a risky business in urban areas. While neglect can take the form of deliberately not feeding an animal, there’s also the heartbreaking reality of families who love their pets but can no longer afford to feed for them.

Many find themselves in the awful position of having to surrender their animals. Giving up a beloved pet isn’t neglect—it’s sometimes the only option. These families turn to us for help. Pet food insecurity is the leading cause of surrender in low-income communities and TEARS is committed to supporting as many families as possible by keeping pets in loving homes through the Feed Hungry Pets Programme. This also helps to keep space at our shelter for truly neglected animals in desperate need of rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and care.

TEARS

TEARS Operations Manager, Mandy Store, says, “We’re appealing to the public to help us assist these families and their pets. We all love our pets, so we can imagine how devastating it must be to give them up or watch them go hungry. Supplement feeding supports families who are really struggling and helps keep loved pets in loving homes.”

Now, we’re asking for your help. Your donations in support of our Feed Hungry Pets Programme will help us provide much-needed food for dogs and cats in need. Together we can keep families whole and companion animals happy and healthy.

Thank you for your support.

You are someone…you do something!

Empowering animal rescue through community support!

Animal rescue is not just a job; it’s a calling that demands immense physical and emotional resilience. Those who dedicate their lives to this cause face daily challenges that go far beyond the average workday. They juggle the complexities of rescuing, caring for, and finding homes for animals, all while managing their personal responsibilities and often also full-time jobs. Yet, despite their unwavering commitment, rescuers often find themselves overwhelmed by the sheer volume of requests for help, with their limited resources.

Animal rescue is a relentless, emotionally draining endeavor and when the community fails to support these efforts adequately, the burden on rescuers increases significantly. The common plea for help on social media saying: “someone help the animal” overlooks the reality that you are someone and you can do something.  For the rescuer, your request for help might be the 10th one of the day and if you can help more than just doing a post for help, then they can deal with 9 situations and you with one.

This article is not meant to make anyone feel guilty or to stop posting for help, but rather to help you understand the reality rescuers face and that there is a need for a more engaged and supportive approach from the public.

THE CRUCIAL ROLE OF COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

To bridge the gap between need and support, it’s essential for the community to actively participate in animal welfare. The mantra should be: You are someone; you do something. This principle involves more than acknowledging the issue—it means taking actionable steps to support rescuers and the animals they care for, especially with individual situations that may arise in your area. We understand that not everyone is always in a position to help at the time, but if you can, then do lighten the load on the rescuers. Yes, it might be a day or two inconvenience for you but it helps that animal and the rescue who is already overwhelmed every day. Let’s explore some ways to do this below.

RESPONSIBLE PET GUARDIANSHIP

First of all, the best way to help is if everybody is a responsible owner/guardian. This is important so that your animals do not overwhelm the system and become statistics and the responsibility of rescuers.

  • Prevent escape and roaming the streets.
  • Spay and neuter your pets, so your female in heat does not attract unsterilized males and your unsterilized male doesn’t go on a walkabout.
  • Provide them with food, water, love, care, and enrichment.
  • Get them immediate veterinary care when needed.
  • Take responsibility for your animals.

AS A RESPONSIBLE COMMUNITY

  • Don’t give animals as surprise gifts to anyone.
  • Do not breed or support breeders, sellers/brokers, or pet shops. We have to euthanize thousands of healthy animals a day in SA because there are just not enough homes.
  • Do not rehome through or support “free to a good home” advertisements.
  • Report cruelty to the authorities.
  • Adopt don’t shop.
  • Educate others.

BE PROACTIVE AND HELP!

Some think that if they posted, then they have done their part, but we need far more than that. Often the excuse for not taking in an animal is that “we have animals”, but so do the rescuers, usually more than you.

Instead of merely sharing posts about animals in need and hoping someone else will handle it, evaluate what you can do directly. Offer temporary foster care, help with transportation, or donate supplies. Recognize that rescuers are already stretched thin, and your direct involvement can make a significant difference.

Can you take the animal to the SPCA?  If you don’t want to do this, then you need to help instead of just saying “Don’t take to the SPCA”!  Can you take the animal to one of our trusted Vets?  Can you keep the animal in your garage or bathroom for a few hours – which is safer than the streets? If the animal is scared, can you put out some food or water (have an emergency packet in your car)?

Another example is finding baby birds. People remove them and then want someone to take them in. We know the intentions were good, but we also often share what to do and request that unless the baby is in imminent danger, not to interfere as they are often fledglings learning to fly.  Always contact a rescuer or rehabber for guidance before you just remove birds, kittens, or other wildlife.

Read the posts rescuers often share on what to do so that you know in advance what to do, which can save time and lighten the load. Also, join local groups like neighborhood groups and the lost and found groups in advance. Here is our Facebook link for Verlore Diere Secunda (TEKS)

If you rescue an animal, assume responsibility for their well-being. Avoid offloading the animal to an organization without contributing support. If you’ve taken an animal into your care, provide necessary food, supplies, or funds to cover their needs. Your active involvement ensures that rescues are not overwhelmed further by additional responsibilities.

Please stop giving animals as surprise gifts because, in the end, the animals suffer when a person cannot meet their needs and are not ready to take them in.

HOW CAN YOU FURTHER LEND A PAW?

GET INVOLVED

  • Connect with Local Shelters: Reach out to a reputable shelter or organization in your area to express your interest in volunteering. Call or visit the shelter, ask to speak to the volunteer coordinator, and introduce yourself.
  • Express Willingness to Help: Inquire about volunteer opportunities or other ways you can contribute to alleviating the shelter’s workload.
  • Explore Various Roles: Learn about the shelter’s operations and explore roles such as feeding, washing, walking, administrative tasks, or fostering.
  • Utilize Professional Skills: Offer any professional skills you possess, such as accounting, IT, fundraising, bookkeeping, plumbing, electrical work, design work, etc., to support the organization.

ADDITIONAL WAYS TO LIGHTEN THE LOAD

  • Stay informed: Read and stay informed about resources shared by animal welfare organizations, even if they don’t directly apply to you at the moment.
  • Educate others: Share your newfound knowledge with at least one person to contribute to broader awareness.
  • Engage on social media: Support organizations by liking, sharing, and commenting on their posts, especially adoption-related content. Your engagement, especially commenting and sharing can increase the visibility of their posts.
  • Participate in fundraising: If financial contributions aren’t feasible, support fundraising events and offer assistance in other ways. You can also organize a fundraiser for a reputable organization.
  • Show appreciation: Acknowledge the efforts of staff, rescuers, or volunteers by buying a coffee or lunch, leaving a note of encouragement, or offering another token of appreciation.
  • Support reputable organizations: Channel your support to organizations with proper adoption policies, financial transparency, and ethical practices. Not just those who claim to do it.
  • Addressing misconceptions and criticism

Rescuers often face criticism and backlash, sometimes due to misunderstandings or misplaced expectations. It’s crucial to approach these situations with empathy. Recognize that rescuers experience emotional and physical exhaustion. Constructive feedback and support are more helpful than criticism, which can undermine the morale of those working tirelessly for the cause. Most rescuers are one failed rescue or one such backlash away from quitting. Animal welfare has enough drama, so don’t get involved, and definitely do not give an uninformed opinion when you don’t have all the facts.

THE RIPPLE EFFECT OF YOUR ACTIONS

For everyone, there is a way to help!  If you can’t adopt, FOSTER. If you can’t foster, SPONSOR. If you can’t sponsor, VOLUNTEER. If you can’t volunteer, DONATE. If you can’t donate, EDUCATE – NETWORK – SHARE.

Every action, no matter how small, can create a ripple effect that extends far beyond the immediate situation and inspires others to join the cause. Embrace the opportunity to make a difference and help build a more compassionate environment for those who need it most.

Animal rescue is a demanding yet profoundly rewarding endeavor. While the efforts of individual rescuers are crucial, they cannot succeed in isolation. The collective power of a supportive and engaged community can significantly enhance the effectiveness of rescue operations and improve the lives of countless animals.

By embracing the mantra “You are someone; you do something,” each of us can contribute to this vital work. Whether through direct involvement, advocacy, or supporting rescuer efforts, every contribution counts. Together, we can create a more compassionate world for animals and ensure that rescuers have the support they need to continue their lifesaving work.

Thank you to every person who has made the effort and often at an inconvenience for themselves or their family, to help animals in need.

TEARS 2023 Sleepathon – NOW OPEN FOR BOOKINGS

TEARS Animal Rescue has announced the opening of ticket sales for the TEARS 2023 Sleepathon, which takes place on three consecutive Saturdays during November.

The annual TEARS Sleepathon is currently in its 10th year and is hosted at the TEARS Kennels and Cattery in Sunnydale. Representing the organisation’s flagship fundraiser, it’s become a highlight on TEARS’ event calendar as it invites animal lovers of all ages to dedicate one night to cuddling a rescue pet while raising much-needed awareness and funds for the charity.

This year’s three Sleepathon events will be hosted on the 11th, 18th, and 25th of November. Tickets cost R250 per person, and every registered “Snoozer” will be provided with a Welcome Pack that enables them to kick-start their own Back-A-Snoozer funding campaign with some great incentives for those that raise R3000 or more for completing their Sleepathon challenge.

Annual income from the TEARS Sleepathon is critical to funding the organisation’s mobile clinic and veterinary outreach services supporting vulnerable pets and pet owners living in under-served communities over the busy December and January holidays.

Image provided by: TEARS Animal Rescue

TEARS Kennel Manager, Luke Kruyt says, “While the TEARS Sleepathon has become an iconic brand building and fundraising lifeline for the organisation it’s also a life-changing experience for our rescue pets as some have been fortunate enough to be adopted as a direct result of the Sleepathon.”

Last year the Sleepathon was supported by 206 “Sleepathoners,” whose combined efforts raised over R380 000.00 for TEARS.  Tickets can be bought via the TEARS Online Shop, with 100 tickets available per event evening. Individuals, friends, and corporate teams are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to create momentum and increase the overall pledges pool from last year.

Says Luke, “We’re grateful for the loyalty of our regular supporters but would like to challenge Capetonians who haven’t ever considered a sleepover in support of rescue pets to sign up for this unique experience that is especially fun for families. The event provides a friendly, loving, and heartwarming environment, with pawsome partners, prizes, delicious food, and entertainment.”

“Snoozers” will be required to check-in at the Shelter at 5PM for an evening of face-licking hospitality and a delicious plant-based dinner. Everyone is encouraged to bring sleeping bags and camping gear, as well as snacks and treats to make their sleepover as memorable as possible. The Sleepathon is only officially over at 7AM the next morning.

Local businesses and lifestyle brands wanting to engage with an audience of animal lovers while supporting a good cause can take up exclusive sponsor/partner packages that provide a variety of association rights and exposure benefits. For more information or to book, please email sleepathon@tears.org.za or visit www.tears.org.za/sleepathon.

60 Hours Chained to a Kennel: A Bold Stand for Animals in Need!

Winter is a season that tests the endurance of both humans and animals alike. In the heart of Kalbaskraal, where the winds howl and the rains pour, there are animals who face these harsh conditions day in and day out, with nothing but a chain to keep them warm and dry. At Chocolate’s Angels, our mission is to provide a voice and a helping hand to these vulnerable creatures. That’s why we’re excited to share an extraordinary endeavor that will not only raise funds but also shed light on their plight: Jason, the founder of Chocolate’s Angels, will chain himself to a kennel for an astounding 60 hours, starting at 6 pm on Friday, June 23rd, and lasting until 6 am on Monday, June 26th.

A Stand for Animals in Need: Jason’s determination knows no bounds when it comes to supporting our four-legged friends.
