The Crusty Nose

Whether our Bullies are French or English, we all know how dry those noses can become.

While nearly all dogs can experience mild dryness of the nose, bulldogs are far more prone to experience a condition named Nasal Hyperkeratosis. In a nutshell this is a more intense form of nasal dryness that causes nasal tissue to grow uncontrollably, covering the nose in scab like tissue, due to excess production of Keratin. Other causes can be medical illnesses like Canine Distemper, a viral infection, or Leishmaniasis, a parasitic infection.

They can also develop this condition on the pads of their feet. This condition can be very uncomfortable and even painful and can influence your dog’s smell when developed on the nose.

You can apply different ointments or oils to your dog’s nose to help moisturize the nose. The dry scabs will peel and fall off. This will have to form part of your care routine as the nose can dry out again very quickly.
