Charity profile

Five years ago our Chairperson, then just an independent community member, walked into the local Oudtshoorn Pound with the hope of adopting a dog and witnessed the horrors of a non-regulated animal shelter. Realising that there was no one that was assisting the animals in need and that there is nobody called somebody – she decided to make the difference. Today the entire communities from Oudtshoorn, deep into the Little and Great Karoo and Eden District depends on our Pro-Life organisation.

In the five years we have doggedly pursued our mantra to Rescue, Medicate, Educate and Re-home and turned animal welfare on its head. This is evident in how many animal rescues are now following our modus operandi and we are constantly seeked for advice and consultation to assist new upstarts. We are thrilled to be able to lead the way.

What do we do that is different. We are Pro-Life. We are not satisfied with helping an animal in need across the “rainbow bridge” – we believe they deserve the right to life and that every animal deserves a second chance to happiness. We believe in EDUCATION! We believe in getting the yard dog healthy and in so doing – discourage the need for constant breeding to provide puppies that were dying at a horrific rate due to unavailability of veterinary care. We teach empathy. There is NO education in carrying out “sweeps” ie driving into a community and putting to sleep all dogs and cats in need of some form of medical attention. We teach our children and adults in the community the need to be empathetic and to get their yard dog healthy. We ABHORE DOGS ON A CHAIN.

Our Chairperson has Magisterial Authority to warn owners and remove animals in need in terms of the Animal Protection Act 71 of 1962. It is well-known that our Chairperson focuses on removing animals on chains and in cages/crates.

Our contributions are vaccinations, sterilisations, vet assistance, observation of sick dogs and returning home when healthy; monitoring all dogs and cats that were beneficiaries of our assistance, rescuing, medicating, educating and re-homing. A large part of our services is the re-homing of our rescues all over SA. EVERY DOG & CAT GETS A HOME – whether a day, week, month or year at our happy shelters – they all go home! We never give up.

All our animals are socialised and run around in open runs! We believe an exercised dog is a happy dog and therefore more prone to be socialised. The moment our rescue dogs are healthy enough we vaccinate and sterilise. This, together with the fantastic outdoor exercise regime – makes for lack of kennel stress and, as such, a dog or cat has a home with us until the day they are adopted. Our adoption costs are not prescribed – ie no adoption fee – merely a donation required – since we do not want to be driven by adoption fees to cover our operational costs. It is our experience that this leads to “pushing out” the adoptions and not really matching the animal (breed) to the specific owner.

The more we helped, the more help was needed and the more space was needed. This led to us branching out to George, where we secured the rental farm Tantivvey in Blanco, George. It is paradise for our dogs that are healthy and sterilised and will not be returned to their original owners. They are moved from Oudtshoorn where they were medicated, sterilised and vaccinated – to the adoption kennels of ODIN in George. The Eden District has been a phenemonal supporter of our organisation. In the interim we have registered as a Non-Profit organisation and as such, ensuring that every supporter feels more confident in assisting us.
